Contains a short biography detailing Merrill's training and combat experiences. Includes a longer account of a bombing run aimed at destroying the Mayen railroad bridge in Germany, and the close call Merrill had as his plane was almost shot down. Includes descriptions of dogfights between Allied and Axis fighters. Discusses the living conditions and emotions present at the beginning of the Ardennes offensive (Battle of the Bulge), especially the Air Corps' frustration with the obstructing weather. Included are two paintings of B-26 bombers.

Merrill, Gerald Joseph, 1924-

Merrill served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II from 1943-1945. He was a member of the 557th Bomb Squadron and was a pilot and tail gunner on a B-26 Marauder Bomber.
